Perspex® acrylic was discovered in 1934 by ICI scientists and has been manufactured in the North of England ever since. The material is manufactured for its global customer base by Lucite International at Darwen, Lancashire. From aquariums to architecture, boats to bathrooms, fashion to furniture, and glazing to shop signage, Perspex® acrylic is used in almost every application imaginable. Types of Perspex® acrylic vary in hues, transparency–from clear to frosted, to opaque–and in their diverse surface textures.
For the fabrication of the triangles needed for the dome's display, Perspex® acrylic worked with Bay Plastics Ltd –stockists, designers and fabricators of semi-finished plastic materials based in North Shields, who supply customers all over the world with quality plastic products, design services and plastic fabrication.
